JUSTIN KURZEL | BIO
Following graduation from the VCA in 2004, Justin’s short film Blue Tongue screened in Critic’s Week at the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded Best Short Film at the Melbourne International Film Festival (2005).
His work has a beautiful and effortless visual style stemming from his years as a Production Designer. Justin also has a natural affinity with actors and this is evident in both his casting choices and amazing performance work in dramatic and comedy spots.
Justin’s work for WWF Earth Hour received major attention at the Cannes International Advertising Festival in 2007, winning a Titanium Lion and his TVC for the British Council collecting a Bronze. He has also directed a number of successful campaigns for clients including McDonalds, Austar, Who Weekly, I & J, Dare Iced Coffee and Tooheys. Dare Boss picked up a Bronze at AWARD, and both Boss and Girlfriend won Bronze at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in 2009. Boss was also listed in Campaign Brief’s Top 30 TVC’s of the decade. His recent campaign for Tooheys has taken out three Bronze awards at Cannes in 2010 for Leak, Nan and SMS.
As well as being known for his film and TVC direction, Justin has directed several highly acclaimed music videos. The Mess Hall Pulse and Keep Walking won Best Music Video and the Audience Award respectively at St Kilda Film Festival in 2008. In 2010, his video Bell for The Mess Hall won Best Music Video and Western Front for Bridezilla was given a Special Commendation at the St Kilda Film Festival.
Justin is currently working on his first feature film Snowtown.
